The Global Big Latch On Pensacola

We had an amazing event once again this year. We are so grateful for all of the participants and the vendors for helping us put on this community event. For those of you that are not familiar with the event, here is some information about it.

The Global Big Latch On is held during the first week of August, World Breastfeeding Week. The first event was held in New Zealand in 2005 and was hosted by the Women’s Health Action. Joanne Edwards of Small Beginnings Group in Portland, Oregon, brought the event to the United States in 2010. The purpose of this event was to:

  •   Bring awareness to the benefits of breastfeeding

  •   Provide community support

  •   Normalize breastfeeding

  •   Provide supportive resources and advocacy

Volunteers offer to host the event every year to gather breastfeeding people and their families. At 10:30 am local time, the children will latch on at the same time. The total number of latched children is then counted towards the global number. Last year we had 112 members of our community join us and 27 latches. This year was our biggest event yet with 172 people and 47 children latched. Globally, there were nearly 60,000 people that showed their support for breastfeeding this year and 18,576 children latched during the one minute count.

Thank you to everyone that joined us this year and we cant wait to see you next year!
